Biotechnology Technician

Employers Who Are/Will Be Hiring

Biotechnology is the one "tech sector" of the Bay Area economy least affected by the 2001 economic downturn. Hiring demand should be steady to increasing through 2003 based on (1) continued business growth, (2) expanded technology application, and (3) high levels of venture capital investment.

The greatest number of opportunities exists in companies focusing on human diagnostics and human therapeutics such as Genentech, and CV Therapeutics, Inc.

Other types of companies focus on the agricultural, veterinary, food/chemical, and environmental aspects of biotechnology. Hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, the California Department of Health, and universities also employ individuals in this field.

In addition to all of the companies you'll find using the steps in the following section, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Stanford Genome Project are other sources worthy of investigation.

In general, smaller companies offer more variety and exposure to new things, and larger companies pay higher but might have more narrowly defined jobs which could get boring.
