Since a high school diploma is sufficient for these jobs, the focus of this section will be on the types of classes students can take, even while in high school, to prepare for this career.

Skills are needed in the areas listed below. If you don't have these skills you can take a class in high school, at a local community college, or adult education center, or possibly learn it on your own:

  • Computer basics
  • Computer keyboarding
  • Typing (word processing: Microsoft Word or WordPerfect)
  • Using a calculator
  • Math basics ("Business Math," "Arithmetic")
  • Business English, Business Correspondence

Skills in this second list are nice to have. They are definitely not required to get a job as an Insurance Claims Clerk, but they could be helpful on the job:

  • Spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3)
  • Databases (Microsoft Access)
  • Medical Terminology
  • Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, Medical Insurance
  • Filing and Records Management
